  • What is etching?

Etching is a chemical reaction that occurs in calcium-based stones such as marble, limestone, or travertine. It's important to note that granite is not calcium-based and therefore typically doesn't etch under normal conditions. In marble, which is softer than granite, etching happens when acidic substances interact with the stone's calcium carbonate composition, resulting in dull spots known as 'etches'.
  • What is staining?

Staining can affect all countertop materials, though some are more resistant than others. Granite and quartz, for instance, are less prone to staining compared to more porous stones like marble. At Huntsville Granite & Marble LLC, our staff receives annual certification in applying Dry-Treat, a premier sealing product, to help prevent staining. While stains aren't common on our installed countertops, they can occur. We recommend cleaning with mild soap and water and promptly addressing spills. Our team is always available to answer any questions regarding stain prevention and removal.
  • What is the difference between granite & quartz

Granite countertops are natural stone, while quartz countertops are manufactured. Each granite slab is unique, whereas quartz tends to have more consistent coloring and patterns, though some manufacturers now offer quartz that mimics natural stone. Both materials are extremely durable and long-lasting with normal use. Granite is one of the hardest naturally occurring materials, while quartz matches its hardness. The choice between granite and quartz often comes down to personal preference and style. Some clients prefer granite's natural veining and movement, while others appreciate quartz's consistency. Both options can enhance your kitchen or bathroom and potentially increase your home's value.
